The short-movie R’ha, produced by 22 year old student Kaleb Lechowski in Berlin, Germany, was released 2 weeks ago on Vimeo, and already reached an astonishing 1.3 million plays. It’s a story about an alien race, whose military was dominated by machines and then turned against them – clearly some parallels to Battlestar Galactica.
The movie is completely rendered in 3D, and was a 7 month college project (!) – Kaleb missed the deadline, but ended up getting interest from Hollywood.
After seeing Lechowski’s creation online, Scott Glassgold, of the managing company IAM Sports & Entertainment, was impressed. “His work is not only professional, it’s extraordinary,” Glassgold wrote Mashable in an email. “There are shots in there that look like they are from a 150-million-dollar movie.” [via Mashable]
Kelab is now heading to Hollywood to pitch his ideas as full featured movie. The tools he used was out of shelf software: Maya, Blender, ZBrush, After Effects and Nuke. The alien is fully 3D animated and contains 300 virtual muscle parts. [via Spiegel.de]
Which seemed to be unthinkable 10 years ago, is now reality:
- Desktop performance reached a level for video effects/rendering, that was only available with expensive render farms in the past.
- Online distribution can instantly reach a broad international audience, which can get you Hollywood’s attention.
